The saw blade retention system further includes a cam-type mechanism (80,90) for allowing the chuck (66) to rotate angularly relative to the saw blade (48) and shaft (32) to a locked position to prevent the saw blade (48) from exiting the slots and for allowing the chuck (66) to move axially relative to the shaft (32) to prevent axial movement of the saw blade (48) between the chuck (66) and the shaft (32). Complementary inclined surfaces (64 and 88) are provided on the saw blade (48) and the chuck (66) to center the blade (48) relative to its intended path of reciprocation.
