The system for protecting individuals working near to machinery or civil engineering works includes a small electronic box (7) mounted in the individual's helmet (3). This unit includes a transmitter and receiver operating in the microwave range, co-operating with a microprocessor and a noise generating alarm. The transmitter-receiver communicates with a similar unit mounted in the cab of a digger or tractor vehicle (4) working in the vicinity. If the distance between the two transmitter units decreases, and falls below a safe threshold, an alarm signal is sounded both in the individual's helmet and in the cabin of the working vehicle.
