System for the detection of laser pulses

The system uses detection of laser pulses in order to effect laser distance measurement. The laser pulse being detected is a pulse of weak amplitude and of very short duration. The spatial and temporal functions of the detection are divided between two detectors. The first detector is a rapid auxiliary detector whose speed of response enables identification of the precise instant at which the pulse arrives. The second detector is a matrix of detection cells whose integration time at the cellular detection level is very short (of the order of several microseconds). The blind periods corresponding to the return to zero of the detection cells are masked by the use of a double level of buffer memory (12,29) which are decoupled. The system is based on a hybrid conception, not using silicon CCD detection cells.
