In a directional solidification process for producing porous or dense, especially superconductive ceramics, ceramic powder, binder and binder solvent are mixed to form a flowable material which allows mould filling under gravity or slight pressure, the material is poured, applied or sprayed into a non-porous mould and then drying is carried out to remove solvent and harden the binder so that a green body is formed. Preferably, the green body is subsequently subjected to directional solidification, e.g. melt-texturing in an isothermal or gradient furnace, or a zone melting operation in which the peritectic or eutectic temperature is exceeded.
