Batch biological treatment of winery effluents

Liquid effluents are treated in a two stage biological process using activated sludge. Effluent for treatment (1) is fed via a holding tank (2) to the first reactor (R1), which has been seeded with activated sludge, and is aerated until the BOD5 or COD has dropped to a pre-set level. The mixture is then settled and the supernatant and some of the sludge is transferred to the second reactor (R2) which was emptied previously, the second reactor is then aerated until the BOD and COD of the effluent drop to below the consent level required for discharge to the environment. The activated sludge is separated from the treated effluent by a membrane filter (FM) and recycled to the first reactor.
