A thin film magnetic head has a magnetoresistive element layer (3) with a detection current supply layer (5), a lower core layer (7) acting as an inductive head core and as a read head protection layer, an upper core layer (6) forming a magnetic gap with the lower core layer and a coil layer (9) for magnetic field application to the core layers. The novelty is that: (a) the upper or lower core layer has the formula FeaMbOc or FeaMb(T+O)c, where M is one or more of Al, Si, Zr, Ti, V, Nb, Ta, W, Mg, lanthanides and preferably Hf and T is C or preferably B; or (b) the upper and lower core layers consist of a magnetic alloy of formula NiaFebXc, where X is Mo or S, a is 44-54 at.%, b is 42.5-54 at.%, c is 0-4 at.% and a + b + c is 100 at.%. Also claimed are: (i) a thin film magnetic head consisting of a read head (h1) with a magnetoresistive element layer, an inductive head (h2) with coil and core layers formed on the read head and a protective layer (1) separated from the magnetoresistive element layer by an insulation layer (2), the novelty being that the protective layer (1) has a predominantly uniform thickness which gradually reduces towards the two side ends; and (ii) a method of manufacturing the thin film magnetic head (i).
