PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a telephone set that accurately performs two-way communication having sufficient content with a simplified operation even when direct communication is not available by recording a message by voice from the other party with a substitute message operation. SOLUTION: A recording and reproducing circuit 5 is constituted of memory such as RAM and records and reproduces a verbal message in a substitute message function and a message, etc., by voice from the other party side to the verbal message. A microphone 11 and a speaker 10 are used for recording and reproduction of the verbal message and for reproduction of a message from the other party. A PHS telephone of this configuration has a substitute message function, and when a calling operation is performed after a verbal message is recorded on the circuit 5, the verbal message is automatically reproduced from the circuit 5 when the other party answers and the verbal message is automatically sent to the other party side. Also, when the other party returns a message by voice in response to the verbal message, the voice message can be recorded on the circuit 5.
