An electrofusion fitting (10) consists of a plastics sleeve (12) having a heating element in the form of a cage (14) formed on an inner surface (22) of the sleeve. Holes (24) are formed in the sleeve evenly distributed throughout the cage area and into which molten plastics flows once the cage has been heated to above the fusion temperature of the plastics fitting. Such flow breaks the oxide layer on the surface of the fitting and a pipe to which the fitting is to be fused and enhances mixing and fusion of the two components. A method is also provided in which such breaking of the oxide layer and mixing of the plastics of the two components is provided by relative movement between two components when their surfaces are molten, such movement being in a direction parallel the mating surfaces. |
