The grinding resistance of a mineral material e.g. hardness is predetermined using values derived from a calibration curve and from computer-controlled automatic profile analysis of diffractograms of samples of a new material to be ground. The grinding resistance of a mineral material is predetermined by (a) creation of a calibration curve for at least one representative comparison material from a number of physically prepared and evaluated comparison samples; (b) laboratory determination of the significant mineral properties of the main mineral of a new material to be ground by taking x-ray diffractograms of several samples of this material and evaluating these diffractograms in a common computer-controlled automatic profile analysis; and (c) calculation of the grinding resistance of this new material using the values from the calibration curve and from the automatic profile analysis.
