The drop latch (22) is blocked by a locking element (32) movable by gravity and unlocked by an operating mechanism (44). The drop latch is in the form of a rotary lever with a free closure arm (24) protruding from the housing (19). The closure arm is beneath the pivot axle (30) of the drop latch which acts like a pendulum. An Independent claim is included for a refuse container.
