Methods and apparatus for determining the location of a magnetic probe within the anatomy of a patient by means of ESR

A gradient magnetic field is applied in imaging region, to determine resonant frequency of sample, and to determine position of surgical instrument with respect to gradient magnetic field accordingly. An electronic spin resonance sample is arranged at a known position with respect to probe (1) of surgical instrument. The sample is placed in imaging region of MR apparatus (100) having main magnetic field. Independent claims are included for the following: (a) magnetic resonance apparatus; (b) position determination device for surgical instrument; (c) surgical instrument utilizing method.
