Gelatine is hardened by a solution of an aliphatic hydroxyaldehyde containing not more than six carbon atoms. The hydroxy group may be attached to a carbon atom adjacent to the aldehyde group. Suitable hydroxyaldehydes are glycol aldehyde, glyceric aldehyde, erythritose, arabinose, xylose, ribose, lyxose, and tartaric dialdehyde. The melting point of the hardened gelatine increases still further on storage. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of hydroxypyroracemic aldehyde. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
