Device for placement of a prosthesis in the treatment of groin hernias by coelioscopy comprises a cylindrical tube (1), a piston (2) for ejecting the prosthesis from the tube, and a spring (3) that is fixed to the piston and is designed to grip the prosthesis and deploy it when it emerges from the tube. Also claimed is a prosthesis for use with the above device, comprising a biocompatible material that is sufficiently perforated or porous to permit tissue ingrowth in vivo and sufficiently flexible to be rolled up and unrolled.
