A water conditioning unit has a soft magnetic core (3) and coil (5) arrangement, connected to a d.c. or a.c. voltage supply, and one or more annular electrodes for modifying scale precipitation. A water conditioning unit, for modifying scale precipitation, has two soft magnetic and electrically conductive wall disks (1) spaced apart and magnetically coupled together by a central soft magnetic soft ferritic core (3) enclosed by a ring coil (5) which is connected to a d.c. or a.c. voltage supply. Inner and outer rings (7, 9) are arranged between the wall disks and enclose a ring electrode (11) or non-conductive separator ring. A divided flow channel (2), formed between the wall disks and the ring electrode or separator ring, consists of two supply ring channel halves (17) and two discharge ring channel halves (19) and is connected to diametrically opposite connection openings (15) and an offset connection opening (21) which passes through the ring electrode or separator ring. The ring electrode (11) or an inner radial electrode, which is insulated from the wall disks (1) by magnetically and electrically non-conductive sealing washers and insulated from the ring coil by a magnetically and electrically non-conductive insulating ring, and an outer radial electrode, which is insulated from the wall disks (1) by magnetically and electrically non-conductive sealing washers, are connected by an electrically insulated connection to a pulse generator.
