The safety unit has an airbag(7) which when deployed covers the frame around the windscreen(2). The frame in the lower region of the windscreen consists of a cowl(3), in the side areas consists of roof columns(4,5), and in the upper section consists of the front roof section(6) of the vehicle. The frame forms at least one cavity(8) in which is fitted the folded airbag. The airbag has a sleeve-form design, and the cavity is covered by a screen.
