The method determines gas-forces in the combustion chamber of a combustion engine by ascertaining the surface expansion of components (6,7,8) of the combustion engine which are directly or indirectly acted on by the force of the combustion chamber pressure in the cylinders of the combustion engine, by means of using at least one capacitive strain sensor. The pressure in the combustion chamber is inferred from the output signal of the strain sensor (1). The expansion of the transition surface between the cylinder head (6) and the cylinder block (8), occurring parallel to the cylinder's longitudinal axis, is detected, and the radial expansion of a gasket (7) located between the cylinder head and the cylinder block is determined.
