The amplifier includes at least one high level stage (16), a control unit (12) and a data transmission path (34) which is used to transmit data signals from the high level stage to the control unit. A coder (32) is allocated to the high level stage and a decoder (36) is allocated to a control unit for transmitting several high level stage signals using a serial data transmission protocol via the transmission path. Preferably, the transmitted data signal has a width of exactly one bit. The transmission path is set up for potential separated transmission and at least in some sections for optical transmission of the signal, especially via an optical waveguide (40).
