The invention relates to a method for eliminating phosphate from liquids, especially waste water, flowing water or the like, characterized in that the metal ions, especially Fe<3+> and Al<3+>, that are required for the precipitation of phosphate are formed by electrolysis of waste water or waters using iron electrodes and/or aluminium electrodes that are impinged upon by electric current, whereby positively charged metal ions and hydrogen ions flow towards the cathode and negatively charged metal ions and hydrogen ions flow towards the anode where they are discharged, separated in the form of atoms and conducted to the waste water so that phosphate can be eliminated. The invention also relates to an installation for the implementation of said method.
