The washing system has a drum rotating about a horizontal axis with the lower part of the drum in a water filled trough. A sieve cylinder inside the drum is spaced from the drum wall and separates the beet from debris. Guide flanges (2,3) between the sieve and the drum move sand and mineral debris into one output gully (6) while the small organic material is separated out via another output. This allows the operator to recover additional sugar from the small pieces of beet.
