PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound with high nematic phase upper limit temperature, having an appropriate magnitude of refractive index anisotropy, and useful as a nematic liquid crystal material for electro-optical liquid crystal displays esp. with wide service temperature range, drivable at low voltages. SOLUTION: This new compound is shown by the formula (R is a 1-10C alkyl, a 2-10C alkenyl or the like; L is CH2CH2 or a single bond; X is H or F), e.g. 2-(3,4-difluoro)phenyl-6-(trans-4-propyl)cyclohexylnaphthalene. The compound of the formula is obtained by the following procedure: a Grignard reactant is reacted with a 4-alkylcyclohexanone followed by dehydrating the reaction product with an acid to form the corresponding cyclohexene derivative, which, in turn, is subjected to catalytic reduction followed by cis/trans isomerization. The resulting trans-moldification separated is demethylated to form the corresponding naphthol derivative, the hydroxyl group of which is converted to triflate, which is then reacted with a Grignated reactant in the presence of a transition metal catalyst.
