The device includes a rotatable roller ball with an associated controller to convert ball rotation into electrical signals. The arrangement has a fixed yet freely rotatable roller ball (12) that can be rolled on a roller surface (14). There is a controller that converts the roller ball rotation into electrical signals corresponding to the cursor's screen position and at least one button unit (44-46) for sending signals to the computer when manually activated. A bearing arrangement (20) has a first horizontal bearing plate (22), and a second bearing plate (2) orthogonal to the first and containing the rolling surface. An actuator (30) is partially spherical or ellipsoidal so that it can be held by the human hand with all fingers. The area not in the hand has an outer contour unit (32) containing the roller ball.
