The pulse width modulated image display device (2), for a plasma display has an arrangement (10,11,12) for controlling a display device (14) such that the time interval (TG) provided for representing an image comprises overlapping time intervals (TG1,TG2). These time intervals are divided into several time successive partial time intervals. A brightness signal (4) associated with a pixel is generated by converting into a predetermined number of activation sequences which are present during one or more of the partial time intervals. The image display device (2) has spot reducing means (10). These provide the sequence and/or the activation sequence of the partial time intervals such that the spots on the images to be shown on the display device are minimised.
