The staircase switch is triggered by a trigger signal such as a key or push button signal so that during a predetermined main switch on time it connects, via an electronic switch, a mains phase line to a staircase light which is also connected to a neutral line. After that, for a predetermined forewarning time, it switches the electronic switch at least once briefly off and on again. The mains phase line leads to a zero crossing identification circuit. Every time there is a zero crossing, the electronic switch automatically switches on and off to a predetermined polarity of the mains voltage.
