PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modem device, capable of displaying the information of line quality during data communication and easily changing a communication speed by the intention of an operator corresponding to the displayed information. SOLUTION: This modem device 1 is provided with a modem part 2 for modulating and demodulating data transmitted to a subscriber telephone line L, an error correction part 3 for detecting the error of the data received by the modem part 2 and requesting the retransmission of the data to a communication equipment on a transmission side in the case of detecting the error, a speed change specifying part 4 for arbitrarily specifying the change of the communication speed by the operator, a control part 5 for requesting the change of the communication speed to the communication equipment on an opposite side, based on specification by the speed change specifying part 4 and counting the number of times of the retransmission by the error correction part 3 and a line quality display part 6 for displaying the line quality corresponding to the number of times of the retransmission counted by the control part 5. With the modem device since the line quality display part for displaying the line quality corresponding to the number of times of the retransmission by the error correction part is provided the operator easily recognizes the instability in the line quality.
