A handle mechanism (10) for operating a vehicle door latch has a handle lever (20) for operating the latching mechanism of a vehicle door latch and a button handle (68) for operating the locking mechanism of the vehicle door latch. The handle mechanism (10) includes a child security lock (46) that disables the handle mechanism (10) so that it cannot unlatch the vehicle door latch. The child security lock (46) is engaged by the handle lever (20) and disengaged by manipulating the handle lever (20) and the button handle (68) in a predetermined sequence.
