A continuous process for extracting one or more dissolved or undissolved solids from a miscible liquid mixture in which one of the liquid components has a boiling temperature substantially greater than that of the other components, involves spraying the liquid mixture into a separation vessel 3. The liquid mixture is flashed or boiled after being mixed with a recycle liquor. The vapour is removed at 8, while the unvaporised portion collect in a liquid pool 9 in the lower portion of the separation vessel. Recycle liquor is removed from the liquid pool through conduit 10 at a rate that is at least 10 times the flow rate of the liquid mixture. The recycle mixture is heated in a heat exchanger 12 to a temperature high enough to vaporise the liquid mixture when it is mixed with the recycle liquor. Solids contained in the liquid mixture settle to the bottom of the separation vessel where they are drawn off.
