PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain coexistence processing to documents whose paper thickness is different by designating not only document size information or document ID information but also information related with the paper thickness for each kind of preliminarily mixed documents to be processed. SOLUTION: A document paper thickness table 17 is added, and not only document size information or document ID information but also the information of paper thickness is designated for each kind of preliminarily mixed documents to be processed in a character recognizing device. Thus, even if processing the mixed document whose paper thickness is different, error check is operated by a double feed error check part 18. Also, the measured result of the document size or the recognized result of the document ID is returned to a controller such as a host equipment, and the paper thickness information corresponding to the result is received each time so that the double feed error check can be attained.
