PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly limit the candidate number of predicted character strings. SOLUTION: A character string predicting device is provided with a pattern recognizing part 103 for recognizing an inputted character pattern by referring to a pattern recognition dictionary 104, and for outputting a recognized candidate character, word dictionary 108 for storing at least reading and a title corresponding to it, dictionary retrieving part 107 for retrieving a predicted character string having a base character string as a leading part by referring to a word dictionary 108, and prediction controlling part 106 for generating a base character string by combining the outputted recognized candidate characters outputted by the pattern recognizing part 103, checking the character codes of the recognized candidate characters constituting the base character string in the generated base character string, and instructing the dictionary retrieving part 107 to retrieve a predicted character string for the base character string fulfilling a prediction start condition preliminarily set related with the number of characters for each character code.
