PURPOSE: A process for producing alginic acid fiber by dissolving alginic acid in water and spinning the solution in an aqueous solution containing chitosan, derivatives thereof or mixtures thereof is provided, thereby producing functional fiber having excellent mechanical physical properties, flame retardancy and antibacterial properties. CONSTITUTION: The titled alginic acid fiber is prepared by dissolving alginic acid, derivatives thereof or mixtures thereof in water and spinning the solution in an aqueous solution containing chitosan, derivatives thereof or mixtures thereof. For an example, 20% by weight of a sodium alginate spinning solution is spun in an aqueous solution containing 10% by weight of chitosan and 2% by weight of potassium chloride to produce a fiber having a single yarn denier of about 10.
