Mesoporous glasses with a monodisperse pore size distribution are produced by heat treatment and extraction of a silica-rich sodium borosilicate glass. Mesoporous glasses, with a monodisperse pore size distribution in the range 2-5 nm, are produced by subjecting a sodium borosilicate glass, with greater than 50 weight % SiO2 content, to heat treatment at 580-700 deg C and extraction with a 0.2-6 mol/l HCl or 1-3 mol/l aluminum nitrate solution at a solids/liquid ratio of 1:15-25.
