PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that prevents deterioration in quality of paper copying an original by avoiding a file margin of an original from being copied black. SOLUTION: Four corners such as upper left of a shade erasure area of a read image are displayed on a display section 27 and an entry key 27b is used to set one of them. Cursors 27d, 27e are displayed on setting positions of a read image display area 27c. A size of the shade erasure area is changed by fixing the cursor 27d and moving the cursor 27e in a direction of the arrow S by using scroll keys 27f, 27g. Black level data of each dot in image data set as the shade erasure area are stored in a memory as logical '1'. Black level data of the image data are converted into white level data by replacing the logic level '1' of the dots stored in the memory as the shade erasure area with logical '0'.
