PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a card, capable of preventing damages of a card clothing, occurring in a short time, and keeping the inherent carding effect obtained when the first card is introduced even after the following cards are introduced. SOLUTION: This method is to operate a drum 10 having a drum card clothing 12 and card having two or more card flats 20, each having a card clothing, in such a way to move the card flat 20 relative to the drum 10 along a given passage while keeping a given distance between the drum card clothing 12 and card flat card clothing 22 and also keeping the running surface of each card flat card clothing 22 along the passage and in contact with the guide surface which restricts the passage, wherein distance between the drum card clothing 12 and card flat card clothing 22 is adjustable according to the conditions of the running surface of the card flat 20.
