PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a non-formaldehyde-based and aqueous-based adhesive composition capable of exhibiting a high heat resistance and water-proof property, and especially suitable for a use of heating and adhering a wood, etc. by using a high frequency press or a hot press. SOLUTION: This adhesive composition is obtained by reacting 3-50 pt.wt. polyisocyanate compound having >=2 isocyanate groups in one molecule with 100 pts.wt. non-vaporizable portion of a polyvinyl acetate-based emulsion containing a polyvinyl alcohol until the residual amount of the isocyanate group becomes <=5 mol% of the amount of the isocyanate group contained in the above isocyanate compound. The polyvinylalcohol is preferably acetoacetylated polyvinylalcohol, and the above reaction is preferably performed at 20-50 deg.C with agitation.
