A spatial light modulation apparatus using a reflection type spatial light modulator, wherein read light is P-polarized light diagonally entering a light reflecting layer 17, liquid crystals in the light reflecting layer 17 being oriented so that liquid crystal molecules incline, when a voltage is applied by a drive circuit (2), in a plane including both an axis of the read light, incident light, and that of modulated light, outgoing light, i.e. in a plane parallel to a slope.
