PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly detect recording date and hour data by setting the number of reading times of reading sub data from a recording medium where the sub data about main information is repeatedly recorded in plural areas and deciding the contents of read sub data when reading for the number of reading times set in the area is performed in any of plural areas. SOLUTION: A system control circuit 28 first decides the date data of the current position of a magnetic tape 10 to detect the changing point of the date. That is, the part 28 decides date data and stores it when date data recorded in the VAUX data area of a sub code sector or a video sector coincide (n) times or (m) times during a search mode. Next, when either of date data recorded in the VAUX data areas of the sub code sector or the video sector is changed, date search is finished with that as the changing point of the date data.
