PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently utilize a storage area. SOLUTION: A display data memory 32 is provided with 1st and 2nd storage areas for storing the data for displaying the 1st and 2nd display areas. When a liquid crystal panel displaying characters both in the 1st and 2nd display areas is driven, character codes are stored in the 1st and 2nd storage areas. A control circuit reads a font data from CGROM (character generator ROM) 33, and displays it in the 1st and 2nd display areas. On the other hand, when a liquid crystal display panel displaying characters in the 1st display area and a picture in the 2nd display area is driven, the character codes are stored in the 1st storage area, and the picture data are stored in the 2nd storage area. The font data corresponding to the character codes stored in the 1st storage area are read from CGROM 33, and the characters are displayed in the 1st display area, and the picture data are read from the 2nd storage area, and the picture is displayed in the 2nd display area.
