PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful as a dopant capable of improving the heat resistance of electroconductive polymeric materials without substantially impairing the electroconductivity inherent therein. SOLUTION: This new compound is a compound of the formula (R1 and R2 are each H, an alkyl, alkoxy or the like), pref. N-methyl-3-sulfobenzamide. The compound of the formula is obtained, for example, by sulfonating the corresponding benzamide compound (e.g. N-methylbenzamide) with a sulfonating agent such as fuming sulfuric acid normally in the molar ratio of (1:1) to (1:200) at 0-150 deg.C. This compound of the formula is used as a dopant for electron- conjugated polymeric materials; the electroconductive polymeric materials doped therewith exhibit high electroconductivity retention even after subjected to heat treatment; and the electroconductive polymeric rnaterials thus afforded can be used as capacitor electrode materials, battery electrode materials, etc.
