PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a crimpable conjugate fiber capable of being dyed with basic dyes and suitable for woven or knitted fabrics each having good bulkiness, tension, stiffness and elasticity, by forming a side-by-side type conjugate fiber comprising a specific copolyester and a fiber-forming polymer having the melting point at a specific temperature or higher. SOLUTION: This crimpable side-by-side type conjugate fiber comprises a copolyester and a fiber-forming polymer having a melting point of >= 150oC, such as polyethylene terephthalate. The copolyester is obtained by copolymerizing 0.5-10 mol.% of a compound of formula I [R1-R10 are each an ester-forming functional group, H or the like; (x) is 0 or 1; (y) is 1<=[(X)+(y)]<=3] with 1-10 mol.% of a 6-12C aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and preferably further 0.5-5 mol.% of metal sulfonate group-containing structural units of formula II (X is an aromatic group; M is an alkali metal; R and R' are each an alkyl). The crimpable side-by-side type conjugate fiber has a boiling water shrinkage factor of <=15%, a crimp elongation factor of >=6% and a heat peak stress of >=0.18 g/d.
