The engine has a piston (6) moving in a cylinder and connected to a crankshaft (10,12) via a connecting rod (8). The crankshaft has a crank web (14), which is freely accessible from one side. The connecting rod has integrally formed journals (18,24) for articulated connection to the piston and the crank web. The engine may have two crankshafts rotating at the same speed but in opposite directions. The connecting rod is cut from an extruded sheet, which has two outer layers and internal struts.
