PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a nimble manipulation by providing the device with a drive mechanism for bringing a pair of recording medium transfer means to each other or parting these means from each other and detecting that the spacing between a pair of the recording medium transfer means is widened by the insertion of a recording medium. SOLUTION: As the disk 101 is inserted into the disk reproducing device 1, a detecting switch 49 goes on and the disk drive mechanism 40 and a guide member 50 are controlled to be moved in a direction parting from each other by the drive force of the slide plate drive mechanism. The spacing between the disk drive mechanism 40 and the guide member 50 is controlled to be opened by the drive force of the slide plate drive control mechanism cooperatively with the insertion of the disk into the disk reproducing device 1 and, therefore, the disk loading is made possible with light insertion force. Further, when the disk 101 is completely inserted between the disk drive mechanism 40 and the guide member 50, the detecting switch is turned on by a projecting part a microcomputer recognizes the insertion.
