Mechanical separation of a string of sausages from its carrying rod. The first sausage in a string is held on a cord loop through which the carrying rod is passed for placement, for instance, in a smoking chamber. A mobile unit is used to collect a number of rods, each of which supports a number of sausage strings. These rods are placed horizontally into rings on a conveyor band that moves them to the separation and cutting station. Grips on a conveyor band hook the loops to move strings off the rods to a position between conveyor bands so that the first sausage is held securely. A cutting station then cuts the loop. The freed string then passes over a rising conveyor band that holds it in a horizontal position for transport to a collection point.
