The invention relates to a relatively CO2 permeable and relatively SO2 impermeable protective layer (7). Said protective layer should be embodied in such a way that permeability by CO2 molecules is reduced. According to the invention, the protective layer (7) has a gas permeable carrier (10) made of a material resistant to sulfuric acid media, e.g. SO2 and SO3, having a surface (8) that can be exposed to a gas and that is fitted with an oxidizing agent with sufficient oxidation potential to oxidize SO2.
