A steam generator (2) has nitrogen removal (purging) device (54) for the heated gas (G) and a combustion chamber (4) for fossil fuel (B), which is connected via a horizontal gas duct (6) and a vertical gas duct (8), behind the purging device (54). The combustion chamber (4) comprises a number of burners (70) arranged at the height of the horizontal gas duct (6) and the vertical gas duct (8) is designed for an approximately vertical upward flow of the heated gas (G) and the purging device (54) for an approximately vertical downwards flow of heated gas (G). An air preheater (58) is provided, with which the purified heated gas (G1) leaving the purging device (54) is used for heating the air.
