PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a stable new compound composed of a specific carbapenem ester compound, produced at a low cost, excellent in absorbability from the digestive canal, having low toxicity and useful as an antimicrobial agent for treating and preventing microbism. SOLUTION: This new compound is the one of formula I [R1 is a group of formula II (R3 is H or a 1-4C alkyl); R2 is a 1-20C alkyl, a 3-7C cycloalkyl or the like], e.g. ethyl (1R,5S,6S)-6-[(1R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-1-methyl-2-[(4R)-2-oxo-4- pyrrolidinylthio]-1-carbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a carbapenem compound of formula III with a compound of the formula: R2L (e.g. a halide of R2) in a solvent (e.g. N,N- dimethylformamide) in the presence of a base (e.g. sodium carbonate) preferably at 0-30 deg.C for 0.5-3 hr. After finishing the reaction, the reaction liquid is treated by concentration, extraction, activated carbon treatment, crystallization or the like.
