PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce occurrence of white void and black level depression in the case of photographing an object in front of its own vehicle. SOLUTION: The image pickup device is provided with an infrared ray CCD image pickup element 11, a level shift circuit 14 to which a video signal S12 obtained by the element 11 is sequentially supplied, a variable gain amplifier 15, and a white clip circut 17, and also with an integration circuit 31 that extracts the integrated value and peak value of the video signal S12, and a peak detection circuit 32. The level shift circuit 14, the variable gain amplifier 15 and the white clip circuit 17 are controlled according to an output signal from the integration circuit 31 and the peak detection circuit 32. Through the above control, the 1st video signal resulting from parts of the video signal S12 at a 1st prescribed level or over and whose peak component is clipped and the 2nd video signal resulting from parts of the video signal S12 at a 2nd prescribed level or below and whose level is magnified are obtained. An object video signal S22 is obtained by synthesizing the 1st video signal with 2nd video signal.
