PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized printer with an image read function at a low cost with high quality. SOLUTION: This printer is provided with a lighting means on the carriage 10 of which a print head, an image read section and a detection section of an optical encoder are mounted, a photoelectric conversion means 13 that converts a reflected light in an original 11 into an image signal, an image forming means 12 that allows the photoelectric conversion means 13 to condense the reflected light in the original 11, and a detection means for the optical encoder 15 used for controlling a carriage moving direction. The detection means of the optical encoder 15 is used in common for that of the photoelectric conversion means. The serial ink jet system is adopted for the printer printing system. An LED is employed for a light source of an image read section.
