The device has a carrier (1) provided with at least one holder (13) for securing a freely-suspended tea bag (14), displaced against a return spring bias from a raised position to a lowered position, in which the tea bag is immersed in the water (20) held in a cup (16), with automatic return to the raised position under control of a timer switch (11). The return movement of the holder (13) is initiated by release of a mechanical catch (10) by the timer switch (11), with damping of the return movement.
