A kitchen waste water (5) filter container has a filter insert (2) which subdivides the container into a main chamber (8) and an overflow chamber (13). The two chambers (8, 13) are separated by a panel (12), the upper part of which is a coarse sieve (18). When the water (5) level rises within the main chamber and reaches the sieve, floating fat (14) and any other floating substances pass an overflow edge (19) into the overflow chamber (13) from which they are released via an outlet (4) to a trap (3). The trap contains mostly bio-degradable substances mixed with water. The filter insert (2) may be a metal basket or a perforated sheet metal frame.
