PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an Internet telephone gateway device by which a compression system can accurately be decided and quality of voice can be enhanced. SOLUTION: The gateway device has a central processing unit 13 that applies operation control to the entire gateway, a ROM 14 that stores a program to control the entire gateway, a RAM 15 that stores a cross reference table between caller telephone numbers, destination telephone numbers and voice data compression systems, a network interface section 21 that is an interface with the Internet 5, an NCU section 16 that is an interface with a public line network, an AD/DA section 17 that respectively converts analog data, digital data into digital data, analog data, a plurality of voice compression expansion sections 18 that compress/expands voice data, a compression expansion changeover section 19 that selects any of the voice compression expansion sections 18 and a caller telephone number detection section 20 that detects a caller telephone number. Since the voice data compression system can accurately be decided on the basis of the cross reference table among caller telephone numbers, destination telephone numbers and voice data compression systems, the voice quality can be enhanced.
