The service unit (2,2a,2b,2c,2d) comprises a trolley (3) running on rails (14,140) along a textile machine (1) and a robot (4) that is attached to it in such a way that it can be inspected by moving it outwards at right angles to the travelling direction (f1). In this position (I) there is a passageway of at least 40 cm, preferably 50 cm, between the robot (4) and the machine (1). The robot (4) can be mounted so that it can be removed from the trolley (3). Two service units can be fitted to each side of the machine and one can be arranged to take over duties when a robot is removed. The rails (14) can be extended (50,150) at one end of the machine so that they project by one trolley width.
